On April 1, 2006, a New York State law went into effect which allows for non-medical persons in the general community to administer Naloxone to another person to prevent an opioid/heroin overdose from becoming fatal.

The New York State Department of Health currently has over 500 registered opioid overdose programs throughout the state.  Seneca County’s Registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Program is maintained by the Seneca County Health Department.

As a registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Program we are able to train community members (lay responders), other para professionals, professionals, clients or patients and their families on how to recognize, respond and give Naloxone to reverse an opioid overdose.
